Meet Marcel Cornett, Software Developer. Marcel started his career as a graphic designer before switching gears to development. He brings creativity and positive energy to every engagement he works on. While he enjoys working in React and Python, he’s always up for learning something new.
Q & A with Marcel Cornett
Q: What is your role at RocketBuild, and what does it entail?
A: As Software Developer, I’ll be working to help create and build websites and applications.
Q: What three words might people use to describe you?
A: Focused, honest, and direct.
Q: What got you into your career?
A: I had been somewhat interested in Software Engineering as a Graphic Designer. I worked on some projects using HTML and a little JavaScript. The exposure reassured me that I was interested in changing careers.
Q: Describe your educational experience?
A: I graduated from Ball State University with two degrees in Graphic Design and Glass. I graduated knowing a variety of different art mediums to work in including drawing, painting, ceramics, wood, and glass. I worked at Ball State as a Glass Assistant to create commissioned glass pieces including trophies and other sculptures.
Q: Describe your professional experience?
A: After graduating college, I worked for 4 years as a Graphic Designer. In the beginning, I worked at a print shop handling the printing process and photo manipulation. I then worked with a company that made promotional products that were tailored to the design styles of client company brands. For a few years, I worked for a phone company making advertisements in their stores across the country. I worked in multimedia as well including motion design, videography, and photography. I then worked with a magazine company handling layout design before making the switch to become a Software Engineer.
Q: What is your current favorite coding language or framework?
A: I enjoy working in React. I also love the Python language. I want to look more into Bash scripting to automate a lot of actions on my computer.
Q: What’s your favorite type of project or client to work with?
A: I enjoy working on a project from beginning to end. I work well showing a client what I’ve made, getting feedback, and then making it better. This process helps get closer to assisting people to get what they need.
Q: What are you super passionate about?
A: I’m passionate about art. I do my best to get better at what I do or just learn from others’ work.
Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I play video games when I have free time. I like hanging with friends and doing activities… bowling, skating, dancing, whatever the group is in the mood for.
Q: If you had to stay up all night for a hackathon, what drinks and snacks would you need to keep you going?
A: Probably Oreos, since I find myself eating those routinely.
Q: Favorite local lunch spot?
A: La Chinita Poblana. They have great shrimp tacos.
Q: Favorite band or artist?
A: My favorite music duo is Phantogram.
Q: Favorite place you’ve ever visited?
A: Probably Colorado. There is such a wide variety to the environment that it’s hard to get bored. Places that have plenty to explore offer great photography potential.
Q: A fun fact about yourself:
A: I graduated from college with a second degree in Glass (Glassblowing).
Q: A random fun fact:
A: Glass has a melting point between 1400°C to 1600°C depending on its composition.
